United Nation, New York, 9 July 2009 – The Security Council held an open meeting today on Somalia, with briefings from Under-Secretaries-General, B. Lynn Pascoe, for the Department of Political Affairs, and Susana Malcorra for the Department of Field Support. Mr Pascoe stressed that it is in the international communities interests to support Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in its attempt to regain control of the country and ensure political stability there. He told the Security Council the world must ensure that the government does not collapse and that political groups press forward with the peace process. Among his recommendations, Mr Pascoe called on countries to offer their full support to the TFG as the “legitimate authority” in Somalia. He also urged donor countries to honour their financial pledges made at April’s Brussels Donor Meeting for Somalia.
