An alleged robber became his own victim when he accidentally shot and killed himself during an attack on a Somali-owned shop in Delft over the weekend.
The incident took place after 4pm on Saturday when the man and two others entered the shop on Keurboom Street and demanded money. His firearm went off as he handed the money to his accomplices, who fled the scene.
This incident came three months after a Somali shopkeeper was killed in another robbery in Delft.
The Somali Action Group’s Mahad Omar Abdi said Somalis were still being targeted, often because they were vulnerable and generally lived in high-risk areas, such as Delft. He said the group was holding meetings in Gugulethu to address the robberies, but nothing “concrete” had yet come of this.
Provincial police spokes-man Captain Frederick van Wyk said he had no information on the dead man, nor could he confirm if any suspects had been arrested.
