2_391971_1_252Bartamaha (Somalia):- A professor of international affairs at the Qatar University (QU) has published a book on the conflict in Somalia and the advances towards resolution and peace-building, a university spokesperson said yesterday.
Entitled Understanding the Somalia Conflagration: Identity, Political Islam and Peace-building, the book by Dr Afyare Abdi Elmi was published by Pluto Press in June this year.
The book focuses on an in-depth analysis of the factors contributing to conflict in Somalia which has serious ramifications for the entire region, according to Dr Elmi.
QU Department of International Affairs chair Dr Steven Wright said: “We at the department are proud of Dr Elmi’s achievement that not only positively reflects on his work and our department, but the university as a whole.”
The book has been critically acclaimed as “an excellent, well-researched work” by W Andy Knight, chair and professor of the Department of Political Science, University of Alberta.
“Elmi gets right to the heart of what makes Somalia a failed state and what are the prerequisites for sustainable peace-building to take root in that unfortunate war-torn country.

This is a must-read for anyone concerned about the plight of the Horn of Africa and the fate of Somalia,” Prof Knight wrote.
The book looks at understanding the sources of the Somali conflict; clan identity and implications for peace-building; Islam and Islamic awakening in the country; US foreign policy after 9/11; the role of regional countries and organisations in the conflict; peace-building education; and the role for the international community in advancing conflict resolution and peace-building.
