Bartamaha (Nairobi):-Three members of the AFM’s 1 Regiment have arrived in Uganda to participate in the European Union’s Training Mission for Somali military personnel.
The purpose of the mission, known as “EUTM Somalia” (European Union Training Mission Somalia) is to train Somali military personnel, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the Somali government.
“Malta has a direct interest in contributing towards a peaceful and stable Somalia, given the large number of Somali third country nationals who land here or who need to be rescued after they find themselves in difficulty on the high seas in the central Mediterranean,” the AFM said.

The EU mission, which is headed by Spain, will see military training being delivered to some 2,000 Somali trainees over a period of 12 months.

The European Union is deploying nine instructor training teams to train Somali security forces. The AFM is initially contributing three instructors on a six-month tour of duty. Another three AFM personnel will follow for another six-month deployment.
The three Maltese Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) who are either current or former members of the AFM’s ‘C’ (Special Duties) Company had all volunteered to form part of an Maltse-Irish combined training team based in Bihanga, 211km West of Kampala.
They have been assigned to train Somali non-commissioned officers in areas such as military leadership skills, infantry tactics and instructional skills.
