Anti-government protesters in Egypt weathered a night of clashes and thousands remain camped out in Cairo’s main square Thursday. The military took up positions in the streets between supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak.

Chaos erupts in Cairo
Thousands of supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak battled in Cairo’s main square, raining stones, bottles and firebombs on each other in scenes of uncontrolled violence as soldiers stood by without intervening.
Protesters Organized By Single Mom In Tiny Control Room
Hosni Mubarak, 82, has ruled Egypt for 30 years and has deep roots with the nation’s military.
Amal Shareef, 36, is the single mother of a 10-year-old daughter and teaches English. It’s unclear which one has more influence today.
NBC’s Richard Engel reports that the soft-spoken Shareef is leading a group of 10 volunteers in a tiny control room, making hundreds of cell phone calls a day in order to help organize the protesters in Egypt.

A crowd of thousands rushed to speakers and projection television screens to listen to their president address the unrest that has swept over the nation in the past eight days. They weren’t happy with what they heard and told an Al Jazeera web producer they would remain in the square until Mubarak leaves.
Mubarak says will not run for presidency again (The Speech)
(Reuters) – Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak said on Tuesday he would not run for the presidency again and would work in the last months of his term to allow the transfer of power.
He said the main priority was the stability of the nation to allow the transfer of power. A presidential election is due in September.

Turkish PM calls for Mubarak to stand down
Recep Erdoğan, the Turkish prime minister, has called on Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s president, to listen to the calls for change from Egyptian people. Al Jazeera’s Anita McNaught in Istanbul speaks about the Turkish PM’s forceful remarks.
Erdogan said “I have a very sincere piece of advice for … Hosni Mubarak,” Erdogan told deputies and party supporters in Ankara, at the same time hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Cairo to demand political change in Egypt. “No government can survive against the will of its people. The era of governments persisting on pressure and repression is over … All of us are mortals, transient things. All of us will die and will be judged on what we have done. Our resting place as Muslims is two square meters of earth.”

Prisoners escape Egypt prisons
Scores of prisoners, possibly in their thousands, have managed to escape from Egyptian jails in the chaos caused by mass protests across the country. Among those escaped prisoners are some Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera’s Nicole Johnston speaks to one of the escapees – a member of the Army of Islam. He is back at home in Gaza after spending three years at a prison in Cairo.
