It is an image Udbi Wallin cannot forget.

An elderly blind woman sits alone under a makeshift shelter of twigs and cloth in a camp for refugees of the recent violence in Somalia. She has no food. Her only daughter has abandoned her — choosing to leave rather than watch her mother starve to death.

Woman Makes History As 1st Somali Carleton Grad

One woman is making Minnesota history after only being in this country for a few years. Muna Noor is one of the first Somali students ever admitted to prestigious Carleton College in Northfield. Noor had to overcome a lot to get there.
“I came to Minnesota and everything was a discovery,” said Noor.
She and her family escaped a life of hardship in Eastern Africa when she was just 16.

Amin Amir’s colourful cartoons provides us with vivid and complex picture of its nature and origin. As the saying goes: “A single image or picture is worth more than thousand words.” Amin’s cartoons highlight again, and again the unfortunate situation in Somalia and soon every major website and newspaper reproduced them, mostly in their front pages, to satisfy the readers’ seemingly insatiably appetite for news from the old home, now in ruins. And one of the best tools to help put smiles (and sometimes shock) on our faces is Amin’s political, social and economic cartoons.(banadir)

Baldwin Medal of Liberty Award for international human rights defenders, Human Rights First announced today.Criteria upon which the Baldwin Medal is awarded include distinctiveness and effectiveness of the nominee’s human rights advocacy and the degree to which the nominee faces risk as a result of their work.
