Woman Says Somali Pirates Beat Her and Her Husband
A British woman who was held captive along with her husband by Somali pirates for more than a year says their captors beat them.
Rachel Chandler tells the BBC that the beating occured after the
pirates decided to separate the couple, who didn’t want to be
separated. She says they were very frightened at that point.
But when asked about their health now, she says, “we’re OK.”
She and her husband Paul, both retirees, were sailing the world
on a 38-foot yacht when they were captured by Somali pirates who demanded a huge ransom.
The Chandlers were thin and exhausted but happy after they were released in Somalia then flown to Nairobi, Kenya.
Rachel Chandler said at a news conference in Somalia that they
are happy to be alive and desperate to see their family.
