Ugandan Forces To Stay In Somalia
Bartamaha (Nairobi):- The Ugandan government has vowed not to withdraw its peacekeeping troops from Somalia until it is assured that the government of Somalia is able to take full control of the capital Mogadishu, Africa News.com. Uganda said it will only withdraw its peacekeepers until the government defeats Islamist militias Hizbul Islam and Al Shabaab.
An army general of the Ugandan People’s Defense Force (UPDF) Brigadier Charles Angina said UPDF forces will stay as long as there is a civilian war in Somalia.
He said Ugandan forces will stay in Somalia until there is lasting peace in the Horn of Africa nation.
The General was speaking in a fundraiser for Ugandan army personnel in Somalia in Kampala where $20 million was raised to support the forces in Somalia.
Ugandan and Burundi have more than 5000 peacekeepers in Somalia to back the embattled transitional federal government of Somalia.
According to the army general UPDF forces have received international recognition their efforts to make peace in the volatile nation.
Somalia has been without effective government for almost 18 years.
