Uganda Arrests Two Kenyan Activists
Bartamaha (Kampala):-The Ugandan government arrested two Kenyan right activists working on the cases of suspects charged with terrorism for the July 11, 2010 Kampala bombings.
Human rights activist Al-Amin Kimathi of the Kenyan Muslim Human Rights Forum and Kenyan lawyer Mbugua Mureithi were illegally detained on September 15 in Uganda.
Human Rights Watch said the two activists were arrested as they landed at Entebbe airport.
The pair traveled to Uganda to attend the hearing of 34 people charged for links with Kampala bombings.
The men were seized in the Ugandan police’s Rapid Response Unit headquarters in Kireka, Kampala.
Human Right Watch is concerning that the pair is at risk of being tortured by the Rapid Response Unit.
The unit has a history of human rights abuses, including executing suspects, according to HRW statement.
“The Ugandan police should immediately bring these individuals to lawful places of detention and clarify the reasons for their arrest,” said Rona Peligal, Africa director at Human Rights Watch.
“Police officials in Kireka should know that they will be held responsible if either of these human rights defenders is mistreated.”
Uganda’s Deputy Police Spokesman Vincent Sekatte said the two activists were detained for questioning.
The two activists have already accused Kenya of secretly extraditing its citizens to Uganda for the July twin bomb attacks.
Al-Qaeda linked group of Al-Shabaab in Somalia claimed responsibilities for the July 11 attacks. The group said it was avenging the killing of civilians by the African Union peacekeepers.
