Turkish Ambassador: Istanbul To Host International Conference On Somalia
Bartamaha (Nairobi):-Turkey’s permanent representative to UN Ertugrul Apakan said on Wednesday that Istanbul would host a conference on Somalia, and the aim of the conference would be to send a solidarity message to Somalis.
Holding a press conference, Apakan said that the international conference for reconstruction and development of Somalia would take place in Istanbul between May 21 and 23.
The UN’s conference will be hosted by Turkey and with cooperation of Somali government, he added.
Noting that Turkey always appreciated the importance UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon attached to restore peace and security in Somalia and Africa, Apakan said that Turkey was pleased that Ban would also attend the conference in Istanbul.
Turkey effectively joined efforts to bring stability and prosperity to Somalia, said Apakan.
Apakan noted that Turkey contributed the fight against piracy in coasts of Somalia and supported provisional government as well as Djibouti peace process.
He added that Turkey was a strategic partner of African Union.
Apakan said that the conference in Istanbul would not be a donors conference.
