Turkey conference on Somalia ends with declaration

Bartamaha (Nairobi):- A declaration released after the international conference expressed support for Somalia’s federal institutions and people.

NEWSINSIDEThe United Nations (UN) international conference on Somalia has ended with a joint press conference held by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu, Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon and Somalia’s President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in Istanbul.

Speaking at the conference, Davutoglu said a strong message regarding Somalia’s future had been delivered to the Somali people, Africa and the international community thanks to the UN’s conference.

“We want Somalia to rise as a prosperous and peaceful country. We also think that the political reform process in Somalia should be carried out within the scope of a wide-scale national compromise under the leadership of the interim government as soon as possible,” Davutoglu said.

Davutoglu noted that a strong support for Somalia’s economic development had been expressed during the conference, adding security could not be established in a place where there was no functioning economy.

The Turkish minister said that international community, participant countries of the conference and Turkey stood by Somalia.

“We do not want this region to be a location of instability anymore. We want it to be a region where prosperity, economic development and security are established,” Davutoglu said.

“We hope the Istanbul declaration does not stay as a paper only. We will all follow the process and we will always stand by our brothers in Somalia,” the minister added.

The final declaration released after UN international conference on Somalia said that the UN, Turkish government and international community showed strong determination for helping Somalia’s federal institutions and nation to overcome the cycle of illegality, violence and desperation, and for building up a peaceful country with a prosperous future for the Somali people.

The declaration said the conference had reaffirmed the importance of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity, adding that decisive and long-term efforts were required in order to get over the existing difficulties and security issues in the country.

Political cooperation should be encouraged and strong governmental institutions should be set up in Somalia, the declaration also said.

Putting a significant emphasis on the country’s development and economic improvement, the declaration stated that participants of the international conference in Istanbul made a commitment to work for tangible action plans comprising of private sector investments that would create economic regions and pilot projects.

Moreover, upon the completion of the UN conference, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu hosted a dinner in honor of the participants of the meeting at Istanbul’s Sait Halim Pasa Mansion.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Somalia’s President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and many other guests attended the banquet.
