WINNIPEG — A Somali refugee with a violent criminal history in Winnipeg has lost a lengthy legal battle to avoid deportation to his homeland, where he fears his family’s ties to the country’s former military regime will compromise his safety.

Mohamed Said Jama, 39, found himself at the losing end of a federal court application to block his deportation when Judge Michel Shore ruled earlier this month that he is a danger to Canada and no longer has any legal arguments for staying here, after nearly a year of court battles.

Canada Border Services Agency officials ordered Jama be deported no later than yesterday and had arranged to pay up to $50,000 to charter a flight to return him to Somalia, although a spokeswoman for the agency could not confirm yesterday whether he had been removed from Canada yet.

According to court documents, Jama is the eldest of 13 children of Siad Jama, who was a general in the marines under former Somali president Siad Barre, who ruled the east African country from 1969 to 1991 through what many have described as a dictatorship.
