Somali President Escapes Mortar Attack
Mogadishu, 17 May 2009
Somali President, Sh. Sharif Ahmed escaped a mortar attack in the capital city of Mogadishu today. The attack came while the President with some other officials visited the former School Policia to meet military commanders.
During the meeting, a number of mortars suddenly hit the place killing at least one person and wounding about 15 others most of them were civilians. The President was taken back to Villa Somalia by Amisom troops escorting him in the city.
An exchange of mortar attacks has now started in Mogadishu between the government forces and the opposition militants covering a wide area of the city.
Mortar attacks, road-side bombs, assassinations and other forms of killing are the daily doze of the troubled country of Somalia since the fall of the last government in 1991.
