Somali-owned market vandalized “Go Home”

HORMUD

St. Cloud police are investigating vandalism at the Somali-owned Hormud Market on Division Street.

The owner arrived this morning to find “Go Home” spray painted in large red letters.

The market, which is a grocery store with a cafe in the back, is at 3360 Division St. W. Hared Jibyil, who moved to the United States from Somalia in 2001, has owned the store since August.

“I don’t like that,” Jibyil said.

It is believed the vandalism occurred between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 6 this morning. The owner had not received any threats and there are no suspects, Sgt. Jeff Janssen said. No other acts of vandalism against Somali-owned businesses have been reported today.

“At this point, we don’t have anything to go on,” Janssen said.

The paint was removed from the front of the store by 9:15 this morning.

The vandalism angered Linda Wander, who owns Sheer Dynamics, the nail salon next door.

“This is ridiculous. It is just complete ignorance,” Wander said. “My stomach just fell. I was sick. It almost brought me to tears.”
