Bartamaha (Mogadishu ):- A Somali official is urging residents to avoid battle zones in the country’s capital as violence flares ahead of a planned offensive against Islamist insurgents.
Mogadishu Mayor Abdurisaq Mohamed Nor wants citizens at least a couple miles (kilometers) away from battle zones. Residents in Mogadishu are often caught in cross-fire or are hit by off-target munitions.
Emergency officials say more than 40 people were killed and nearly 150 wounded in two days of fighting earlier this week. Most of the victims were civilians. At least two more people were reported killed Friday as government soldiers shelled rebel front lines.
A government-backed offensive against the insurgents is expected to launch in coming weeks.
