MINNEAPOLIS – While many mothers are enjoying mother’s day, one mom in Minneapolis is recovering from a vicious attack.

The victim is a 54-year-old Somali woman, who does not want to be identified and does not speak English. Her brother translated as she described what happened after hearing a knock on her door around 6 p.m. Saturday evening.

“Somebody knock on my door, my son run and open the door they ask me if my son have a gun? Toy gun?” said the victim.

Not knowing what the two women were talking about, the victim was even more surprised when three men came in through her front door. She said one of the women slapped her and someone else hit her with a cell phone and a pot from her countertop. The victim’s 10-year-old son ran to a neighbor’s home for help.

“She was left unconscious in the kitchen” said the victim’s daughter. “My mother was unconscious and left to die. Thank God there were neighbors that came.”

The victim spent much of the night at the hospital and is spending mother’s day hiding her bruised and swollen face from her children and grandchildren.

She said she recognized some of the people who attacked her and knows they live somewhere in the neighborhood. Now the family feels frustrated because they are still waiting for police to talk the woman’s statement.

“We left our country to be protected, we didn’t leave our country to be abused and beaten and get harmed — and the police to protect us. That’s what we thought but obviously it isn’t.”
