Somali leader off to Libya to attend Arab league summit
The president of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government Sheik Sharif sheik Ahmed on Friday left for the Libyan city of Sirte where the 22nd Arab league summit will kick off Saturday.
Escorted by AMISOM tanks and nearly a dozen of armed vehicles President Sheik Sharif was seen off at Mogadishu airport by government ministers, parliamentarians and top security officers, as key roads in the government controlled areas were closed since early morning.
Government sources say that Somalia’s president will deliver a several-pages report about the current situation and latest developments in Somalia at the Arab summit.
“The Arab foreign ministers who prepared the agenda of their leaders’ added a document carrying a big suggestion that Arabs must support Somalia in terms of finance and security,†a presidential aide who demanded anonymity told APA.
“Arab heads of State will discuss on ways to give financial support to Somali government so that it can be able to restore peace and security into the country†Somali foreign minister Ali Ahmed Jama Jangali told reporters.
He said that the major agenda of the Arab league heads of state meeting will be about the holy city of Qudus where Israelis have started building new settlements.
Meanwhile, presidential sources say that after the president’s return from Libya, Somali government and the non-militant Islamist group, Ahlu Suna walJamaa will implement their recent power-sharing agreement signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
