Somali community starts campaign to condem terrorist organisation
THE Somali community in Northampton has started a campaign to show people in the town it condemns a terrorist organisation from their homeland.
Al Shabaab – which fights in the East African country for, among other things, stricter Muslim laws – claimed responsibility for a deadly bomb attack in Somalia earlier this month, following another last March.
The UK Government put Al Shabaab on its banned groups list last year and Northamptonshire Police has since sent out information to the sizeable Somali population in Northampton asking their views and warning them not to become a supporter of the group.
Abade Ahmed, who liaises between the Somali community and the NHS, said: “Somalis in Northampton do not agree with Al Shabaab’s aims or their interpretation of Islam and we condemn their terrorist acts. We want to educate other Somalis and the whole of Northampton that we want nothing to do with Al Shabaab.”
The community is planning a series of meetings in Spring Boroughs to warn others against Al Shabaab.
