Somali community identifies city’s latest homicide victim
Alberta’s Somali Community is identifying Edmonton’s 25th homicide victim of the year as Abdi Ali.
A man in his 30′s was fatally shot east of downtown last Friday.
A tent was eventually set up in the area shielding the body from the public’s view in the area of 86 St. and 106 A Ave.
Edmonton police say they were called to area on a report of gunshots.
Acting Edmonton Police Chief David Korol addressed the media Friday afternoon confirming police have another homicide investigation on their hands.
“This is Edmonton’s latest homicide, way too many for a city this size,” said Korol.
Calgary currently sits at two homicides for 2011. Korol says there are strong theories as to why the two cities differ when it comes down to the numbers.
“We have some federal and provincial correctional institutions in Edmonton that Calgary doesn’t have. We are a draw for the northern community, not that that means there’s anymore involvement in crime or anything,” he said.
He admits criminal elements from places such as Fort McMurray, use Edmonton as the hub of illegal activity, including drug trafficking.
