Somali community centre opens in South Harrow
A NEW centre for the Somali community has opened in South Harrow.
The Somali Youth and Family Centre, in Stanley Road, will offer mentoring, drug prevention advice and a homework club for young people, as well as parenting classes for adults.
There will also be an entertainment room and employment advice at the facility, run by the Harrow Association of Somali Voluntary Organisations (HASVO).
Yusuf Yusuf, youth coordinator at HASVO, said: “This will give Somali youths a centre of their own because they’ve been guests in a lot of other places.
“It will also give them a point of contact with the police. If officers have any concerns they can come and interact with the youth here more easily than on the streets.â€
Councillor Jean Lammiman, responsible for community and cultural services at Harrow Council, cut the ribbon on the centre at its launch on Tuesday.
