Kenya:Police impound guns on transit to Nairobi.

ak 47Bartamaha: Police have seized seven assorted guns and two dozens of assorted bullets at a roadblock along the Nairobi-Garissa highway.

The guns were being transported in a bus when detectives from Special Crimes Prevention Unit intercepted it on Thursday night.

A suspect who was accompanying the illegal weapons is being interrogated. He has revealed he was to bring the weapons, which included rifles, pistols and 26 bullets to Eastleigh, Nairobi.

The detectives who have termed the suspect in custody as a gunrunner were on Saturday investigating the intended receiver of the weapons.

The seizure was the biggest to be made of late as police struggle to contain the rising rate of crime. It was, however, not the first time that police were intercepting guns en route from North Eastern to the city.

Most the weapons used in terrorising city residents are believed to originate from Somalia through the Kenya-Somalia boarder.

Police said they had been tipped off the weapons were being transported from Garissa to Nairobi before they laid a roadblock near Matuu town.

The guns had been stuffed in a bag and covered by clothes at the time the detectives struck at about midnight on Thursday. Head of the unit Richard Katola said the weapons could have caused havoc in the city had they not been intercepted.

Gunshot wounds.

And in Kayole, police shot dead a suspected thug and recovered a gun. The suspect was in the company of three others and had been terrorising residents on Thursday night when police were alerted.

Elsewhere in Kamulu, Kayole area, a body of a man with gunshot wounds was discovered on Wednesday. Police said the man has not been identified. Police on patrol said they saw a car make a u-turn in the area and later heard gunshots before the same vehicle sped off.
