Pizza deliverer fled violence of Somalia, dies in Calgary stabbing
Bartamaha (Nairobi):- Like many of his friends and family, Mohammad Ahmed Mahmud fled Somalia to escape a future threatened by violence and fighting.
So it’s heartbreaking and ironic, says his uncle, that the 36-year-old, who delivered pizzas for a living, died of a stab wound following a fight.
“But every life has a time frame and maybe his time was done,” said Abdulgani Bihi of his nephew, whose friends called him Ahmed.
“It’s very, very sad. We don’t know what happened or why he was there.”
Police said he was fatally stabbed Friday at an apartment in the 1500 block of 21st Avenue S.W. It’s believed he was arguing with a resident.
“He was stabbed once in the heart or the chest with scissors,” said Bihi. “One stab and he is gone.”
Police took a resident of the building into custody after arriving at the scene.
Family and friends said police have shown them photos of the accused and they don’t know how the victim knew him — but say he was also Somalian.
“Ahmed was a very clean, respectful guy,” said Bihi. “He was a hilarious guy who had a good sense of humour.”
Mudhir Mohamed, president of Calgary’s Somali Canadian Society, said the victim was a devout Muslim who often visited with friends at a downtown coffee shop.
“In one of our last conversations, he told me, ‘I like to practise my faith and I don’t like to do bad things.’ So who knows, maybe he was talking to this man about faith — we just don’t know.”
Mahmud’s mother, who hadn’t seen her son in about eight years, arrived Sunday from Minneapolis to attend his funeral, said Bihi.
“She can’t eat or sleep,” Bihi said. “She is not good.”
Ahmed Abdulkadir Mohamed, 30, has been charged with second-degree murder.
