If you’re using your windshield wipers, your headlights better be on. Under a new Ohio law, motorists are now required to turn on their headlines whenever the weather is bad enough to necessitate the use of windshield wipers.

A previous version of the law said that headlights should be on during “unfavorable atmospheric conditions”, however that was left to the interpretation of the driver and the officer. The new law makes it much clearer when they should be used.

If your vehicle is equipped with daytime lights that automatically turn on when the vehicle is running, then the law will have little to no effect on you. For others it is a simple way to remember when your front lights should be on.

Violators over the next six months will simply be issued a warning, and after this introductory time period, citations will be written. The offense is considered a secondary violation, which is similar to the seatbelt law. Motorists may only be stopped for not having lights on with wipers when stopped for another violation.

Considered a minor misdemeanor, violators can pay up to a $150 fine. If cited, motorists will not receive any points on their licenses.
