Obama orders terror safety review

Bartamaha News Desk

US President Barack Obama has ordered a review of the nation’s watchlist system and its air safety regulations after an attempted airline terrorist attack.

Mr Obama has also told his national security team to keep up the pressure on terrorists aiming to attack the US.

He said US officials were doing everything in their power to ensure Americans are safe in the wake of the Christmas Day attack on a Northwest Airlines flight bound for Detroit.

The President, issuing a statement during his holiday in Honolulu, said US authorities will not rest until they find everyone involved in the attack in Detroit and hold them accountable.

Mr Obama’s remarks were his first in public about a Nigerian man’s alleged attempt to bring down the airliner.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is being held in a federal prison in Michigan after suffering burns in the botched bombing.

The news came as Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for attempted bombing.

In a statement posted on the internet, the group said Abdulmutallab arranged the attack with its members, in retaliation for a US operation against the group in Yemen.

Yemeni forces, helped by US intelligence, carried out two air strikes against al Qaida operatives in the country this month.

The second one was a day before the attempted bombing of the plane. The group said the would-be bomber used explosives manufactured by al Qaida members. Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is an alliance of militants based in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
