Local Somali Community Upset Over Terrorist Link
Bartamaha (OHIO):- Somali leaders in Columbus were shocked over the reports that someone in their community helped raise money for a terrorist group in Somalia.
“We feel agony and angry about it,” said Hassan Omar, president of the Somali Community Association of Ohio.
He says collecting money door-to-door is a common practice in the community. But when that money is used to help terrorist organizations, it’s not tolerated.
“The Somali community here in Ohio … we are not trying to protect the bad guys. We will not allow somebody to come and destroy our life,” said Omar.
Community leaders will be gathering next week to address the issue and to figure out, as a community, how to deal with it.
Mussa Farah runs the Horn of Africa Community Center and says that they will not discourage people from giving but will help educate the community on what questions to ask before they give.
“Ask him to show you the business plan. Is he tax exempt? Ask him what he does. There should be a lot of screening when you are giving out,” explained Farah.
Farah hopes that by increasing his center’s outreach, it will help prevent this from happening again.
“That will not kill our moral of what we are doing. We will still continue. We will work hard. We are citizens of this country. We love this country,” Farah said.
