Kremlin Eyes International Piracy Court

imagesThe Associated Press — President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday called for the possible creation of an international piracy court.

The Russian destroyer Admiral Panteleyev captured a vessel with 29 suspected Somali pirates last week off the coast of Africa, and the Navy is debating what to do with them.

Medvedev told Prosecutor General Yury Chaika to explore ways to hold suspected pirates accountable.

“We have to consider all options, including the creation of an international court,” Medvedev said, RIA-Novosti reported.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy in Moscow said the Admiral Panteleyev has freed eight Iranians who were seized along with the suspected pirates last week. Russian officials said at the time that Iranian and Pakistani fishermen were detained along with the suspected pirates. The Iranian Embassy said the Iranians had been held captive by the pirates for almost three months.
