Kenya asks US to lead int’l effort in Somalia
NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s president has asked the U.S. to lead a greater international effort to stabilize neighboring Somalia, a country that has been without an effective government for 19 years.
Kenya’s leader was speaking at a Tuesday news conference with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
Biden is in the East African nation, the birthplace of President Barack Obama’s father, to press for political reforms in the country and discuss the situation in Somalia and Sudan.
If Kenya strengthens its rule of law, the country will open the door to greater U.S. aid and investment, says Biden. He encouraged Kenya to continue with reforms initiated after the country’s postelection violence. More than 1,000 people were killed after the December 2007 poll.
