The day after a prototype of the next version of the iPhone made its way into the hands of the editors of Gizmodo, a technology blog, the Web was awash with conspiracy theories. Readers of The New York Times Web sites, and of others, questioned the authenticity of the phone, although The Times and others confirmed that it was the real thing. Some also asked if the phone was a ‘plant,’ intentionally let out into the wild by Apple itself, to gain publicity for its newest gadget.
