Bartamaha (London):- FREED Rachel Chandler considered killing herself during her hostage hell with husband Paul.
The admission came as Rachel, 56, revealed the full horror of their year held captive by pirates.
At one point she and Paul, 60, were whipped and Rachel lost two teeth.
But her darkest spell came when the couple were parted.
She said: “I did think, ‘The only option I have is suicide’. I thought about dying and not fearing death.
“Then I pulled myself back up. It gave me the strength to face it again next time.”
The couple from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, were snatched during a round-the-world sailing trip and finally released by the Somali gang this month.
Two months into their captivity, they were subjected to a brutal attack.
They had been ordered to separate but defiantly refused the pirates’ leader, a thug called Bugas.
Paul said: “No one ever defied Bugas. For a few minutes there was an air of disbelief. He got his rifle and I said, ‘You might as well kill us’. It would be better to die there than be separated.”
Bugas fashioned a whip from a root of a tree and savagely beat them. When Rachel fell to the floor, he smashed the butt of his rifle into her face.
Somali-born ex-London cabbie Dahir Kadiye, 56, negotiated the Chandlers’ release.
