Freighter Captain Was Hit by Friendly Fire
One of the four bullets that hit Seok Hae-kyun, the captain of the hijacked freighter Samho Jewelry, during a rescue operation was a stray bullet from a Korean Navy commando.
In a press briefing on Monday, a spokesman for the Korea Coast Guard admitted a check of the bullets extracted from Seok’s body shows that one of them is probably a handgun shell, an MP5 9 mm submachine gun shell, or an MP5 silent bullet used by Navy commandos.
Kim Chung-kyu, who leads the special investigation team, said, “The National Forensic Service will undertake a precision analysis of the bullets next week.”
The investigators, meanwhile, claim they proved all charges against five Somali pirates caught in the rescue operation, including hijacking of the freighter, maritime robbery, hostage taking, attempted murder, and obstruction of justice.
