Enfield hosts Somali sports week to promote peace

somalifootie+.jpg.displayBartamaha (London):- Sporty Somalians from across the UK descended on Enfield last week to take part in a week of summer soccer.

Eight football teams took part in the event organised by the Somali Sports Association at Oasis Hadley Enfield, in Kinetic Crescent, Innova Park.

The aim of the games, which took place from July 26 to August 8, was to promote peace and encourage community cohesion.

Two former presidents of leading Somalian football teams, Hussein Dirie Afrah and Ahmed Abdi Daher, attended, alongside Somali Government minister Mohamed Abdi Yusuf.

Mr Yusuf, minister for rural development, described football “as a crucial way of integrating and peace building among different communities”.

He said: “A sports contest like this is a significant instrument that could create trust and unity among communities.”

Other guests included Said Eyrow and Mohamed Ismail, both players in the Somali national football team in the early Eighties, and Muridi Aba-nur Abati, considered by many to be “Somalia’s Maradona”.
