Dutch High Court Approves Extradition of Somali Man

Mohamud-Said-Omar-201x300The Dutch Supreme Court has approved the extradition of a Somali man to the United States, where he is wanted on terrorism charges.

The court rejected an appeal Tuesday from Mohamud Said Omar and ruled he will be extradited soon to the U.S. city of Minneapolis, where he once lived.

Dutch police arrested Omar in November 2009 at a center for asylum-seekers in the town of Dronten.

U.S. authorities accuse him of financing arms purchases for the Somali insurgent group al-Shabab, and helping militants travel to Somalia to take part in a jihad [holy war].  One of the militants allegedly carried out a suicide attack in Somalia in 2008.

The United States has requested Omar’s extradition from the Netherlands, which has an extradition treaty with the United States.
