CIVILIANS KILLED IN MOGADISHU, HAWIYE TRIBE ELDER MURDERED

photoBartamaha (Nairobi):- Fifteen people, most of whom civilians, were killed in fighting between the rebels and the government troops in Mogadishu yesterday.

Somali sources said that the situation is somewhat calmer today and that 60 wounded people were taken to hospitals in the city.

The appeal to give up weapons by an Islamic association, in honor of Ramadan a few days ago has gone unheeded Somalia. In fact, many are shocked by the murder of Sheikh Mohamed Tahlil Warsameh, an influential elder of the Hawiye clan and former president of the council of Elders.

Tahlil was killed in the night between last Sunday and Monday in Elasha Biyaha, a village located between Mogadishu and Afgoye under the control of the Hizbul Islam armed group.

Addressing the heads of the latter group, the spokesman of the Hawiye elders has asked for the capture of the murderers for the opening of a trial.

There were also clashes in other areas of the country, in particular in the region of Galgudud between Somali (youth) insurgents and Ethiopian troops.
