British Navy Destroys Somali Pirate ‘Mother’ Ship
Bartamaha ( Gulf of Aden):- According to reports from NATO, a British navy helicopter has successfully destroyed a Somali pirate ship, which is believed to be one of a criminal gang’s ‘mother ships’.
The vessel was spotted during a routine patrol by the Navy’s Lynx helicopter and what happened next, according to the statement from NATO is that the gunners managed to open fire on the pirate ship “in full view of the pirate camp”, which then caused the boat to sink.
The small vessel was recognized as the whaler, which belonged to the MV Zouflecar, a boat that has posed as the bandits ‘mother ship’. Within the last month, both the European Navy Force Somalia (EU Navfor) and Nato have captured people who are thought to be pirates, and they believe this has been a major blow for the illegal pirate operations.
“Our destruction of the whaler close to a known pirate camp has sent a message to the Somali pirates, that Nato and other coalition forces are willing to take the fight to them in order to prevent them attacking merchant ships,” said the commanding officer of HMS Montrose, Commander Jonathon Lett.
A helicopter belonging to an undisclosed warship managed to assist a Norwegian vessel carrying bulk cargo, to escape from an attempted assault from pirates, also in the Indian Ocean. The vessel had managed to set off a distress signal, which the helicopter was able to respond to and protect her from the threat of piracy.
