AU force apologises after killing two in Somali city
Bartamaha (Nairobi):- The commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (Amisom) forces, Maj-Gen Nathan Mugisha, apologised over an incident in which a convoy of peacekeepers opened fire at unarmed civilians.
The shooting happened on a road between the International Airport and the Strategic Km 4 Area in South Mogadishu on Tuesday.
Two people were killed and 10 others wounded following the incident. Maj-Gen Mugisha termed the November 23 incident unfortunate.
He said that one of the wounded people was being treated at an Amisom medical facility and that the peacekeepers were ready to assist the others get medical attention. They are currently admitted to Madina Hospital.
Maj-Gen Mugisha confirmed that all those involved in the shooting incident were imprisoned.
He added that the peacekeepers were conducting investigations to determine the circumstances under which the officers opened fire on the civilians.
The investigators will be seeking to establish, among other things, whether the shooting involved prevention of danger or it was an act of negligence.
Discussed with leaders
The commander said that he had discussed the incident with the leaders of the Transitional Federal Government, including President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo.
Amisom, said Maj-Gen Mugisha, promised the leaders transparent investigation.
Maj-Gen Mugisha thanked the Somali people for their cooperation with the peacekeepers and all those who offered the victims of the Tuesday incident some help.
He reiterated that Amisom’s mandate is to help restore peace and stability in the war-torn country.
