Canadian frigate HMCS Winnipeg intercepted two pirate boats in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday.
The CBC says the two boats fled, but the Winnipeg caught up to one of them about 80 kilometres off the coast of Yemen.
The skipper of the frigate, Cmdr. Craig Baines, says several weapons were seized, including assault rifles and a rocket propelled grenade launcher.
The ship stopped the second boat less than an hour later and found several more weapons.
Six suspected Somalian pirates were questioned and released because Canada can’t take them into custody under international law.
