Ban of Somali meat extended
WAM Dubai, Jun 11th, 2009 (WAM)–The ban slapped on importation of Somali frozen and chilled meat has been extended for another year, according to the conditions and regulations stated in the ministerial decision number 433 of year 2007. The ban comes into immediate effect from the date of issuance on June 10, 2009.
The decision is in line with keenness of the Ministry of Environment and Water to achieve food security and safeguard public health. The decision called on the Department of Livestock to monitor closely the health of animals in Somalia to ensure they were free from the new case of Rift Valley Fever and coordinate with the competent authorities in this respect.
Sultan Abdullah Alwan, acting assistant undersecretary of the ministry for agricultural affairs, said the conditions and measures in the decision number 433 of year 2007, include availability of the valid veterinary certificate, stating the animals coming from Somalia are free from the disease and are quarantined in the accredited quarantine for 30 days before being slaughtered and tested at the laboratory to ensure whether they are infected with the disease or not.
